With the online specialization course in economic evaluation of pharmaceuticals and medical technologies you will learn how to justify the need to carry out an economic evaluation of a pharmaceutical product or medical technology with few resources and you will be able to provide basic knowledge of the main methods (cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis and cost-benefit analysis) and steps to follow in the design and implementation of an economic evaluation study for pharmaceutical products, medical technologies and health programs.

During the course, you will learn to use the necessary tools to carry out a financial assessment of the resources used (costs) in the application of a medical technology, medicine or health program, as well as about the consequences that may arise from the introduction of a new pharmaceutical product or medical technology using cost-benefit analysis techniques.

Content:
This course is made up of 4 Teaching Units, the content of which is detailed below:

Unit 1. Economic evaluation methods for pharmaceuticals, medical technologies and health programs.

1.1 The need to count.

1.2 What are the necessary steps to carry out an economic evaluation?

1.3 Design of a cost-effectiveness analysis of a COX-2 NSAID.

 

Unit 2. Cost analysis in economic evaluation (1).

2.1 Estimation of the costs of a new pharmaceutical.

2.2 The adjustment of costs over time.

2.3 The distinction between average cost and marginal cost.

 

Unit 3. Cost-utility analysis.

3.1 Estimation of the benefits of treatment alternatives.

3.2 The use and calculation of quality-adjusted life years (QALYs).

3.3 Design of a cost-utility analysis (CUA).

 

Unit 4. Cost-benefit analysis (1)..

4.1 Is it useful to assess the result in monetary terms?

4.2 First steps to obtain a measure of net monetary value.

4.3 Assessing the results through the willingness to pay.

Faculty

Jaume Puig-Junoy is Senior Lecturer at Barcelona School of Management - Pompeu Fabra University (BSM-UPF). He has a degree in Economics and Business Sciences with an outstanding achievement prize (1983) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a PhD in Economics (1991) from the same university. He was director of the Research Centre for Health and Economics (CRES) from 2010-2011 and 2014-2015, and co-director from 2006 to 2010. He was president of the Catalan Agency for Health Information, Assessment and Quality (AIAQS) between 2010 and 2011. 

He is currently Director of the Master in Health Economics and Pharmacoeconomics (MESOL) (IDEC-UPF) and the International Master on Health Economics and Pharmacoeconomics (MESIOL) (IDEC-UPF). His main lines of research are health economics, public sector economics, health management and economic evaluation.

Evaluation

The course is evaluated based on 4 individual and personalized final exercises, one for each Teaching Unit, which account for 75% of the final grade for the course. The FINAL EXERCISE of a Teaching Unit is considered to have been successfully passed if a minimum 
of 5 correct answers is obtained out of a total of 10. A pass must be obtained in at least 3 of the 4 final exercises. If you do not pass any of them you will be given the opportunity during the recovery period to try again or to improve the grade obtained (only the highest grade will be recorded in the system).


In addition, at the end of the course there will be an optional individual practical activity that will account for 25% of the final grade for the course. IMPORTANT: The course’s practical activity cannot be retaken and has no recovery period. Therefore, if the practical activity is not carried out within the indicated period, the maximum grade that you can obtain for the subject will be 7.5 (assuming you obtain the maximum grade in each of the 4 subject tests).

The learning process is characterized by its flexibility, since, in the virtual learning environment, the structure of the school calendar and the diversity of multimedia resources which are made available to the student allows them to acquire knowledge in a self-regulated manner.
