Josep Joan Moreso, Professor of Philosophy of Law at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and rector of UPF from 2005 to 2013, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in a ceremony held on May 15 in the Red Hall of the UBA Faculty of Law, presided over by Dean Leandro Vergara.
The distinction recognizes Moreso’s academic career and intellectual contribution to contemporary legal thought. Throughout his career, he has been a key figure in the field of legal theory, with extensive scholarly work focused on practical reason and legal normativity.
The laudatory speech was delivered by Juan Pablo Alonso, Professor of Philosophy of Law at UBA and PhD graduate from UPF, who highlighted Moreso’s role as an academic reference and his commitment to democratic consolidation and legal development in Spain during the transition period.
In his acceptance speech, Josep Joan Moreso delivered the keynote lecture “The Ideal Dimension of Law,” reflecting on the relationship between law, reason, and morality. He cited authors such as Carlos Nino, Eugenio Bulygin, and Carlos Alchourrón, and argued that “if law is to provide us with reasons to act, its foundation must necessarily be moral.” With this distinction, the University of Buenos Aires recognizes Moreso’s international impact.
