The UPF Barcelona School of Management will host the official presentation of the Mirador Basin Project, led by renowned archaeologist Dr. Richard D. Hansen, who will present the latest findings about El Mirador, considered the cradle of Maya civilization. The event, organized in collaboration with the Consulate of Guatemala, will feature a keynote lecture by Dr. Hansen, an introduction to the Kaan Kingdom, a presentation by archaeologist Pilar Vázquez —with over a decade of experience at the site—, and a concluding reflection on Guatemala as a cultural tourism destination.
El Mirador, located in northern Petén, Guatemala, is one of the oldest and most monumental settlements in the Maya world, home to colossal structures like the La Danta pyramid and a sophisticated network of ancient roads. Decades of research have shown that the Preclassic Maya possessed an advanced civilization in engineering, writing, and astronomy, challenging previous theories about their origins. This presentation aims to highlight the cultural, scientific, and environmental significance of the site, as well as to promote its preservation and global recognition.
