The UPF Barcelona School of Management hosted the presentation of the study Impacts of Industrialized Construction from a Triple Perspective: Economic, Environmental, and Social, developed by the Chair of Decent and Sustainable Housing at UPF-BSM and the Metropolitan House Foundation.
The study, authored by professors Ramon Bastida and Ferran Piqué Anguera, provides a comparative analysis of industrialized and traditional construction systems, using a residential building as a case study. It highlights the advantages of the new construction model in terms of efficiency, sustainability, and social impact.
"Innovation efforts in the construction process have led to the development of new building systems, one of which is industrialized construction: this method involves the use of prefabricated elements that are later assembled on-site," explained Professor Ramon Bastida during the presentation.
According to Bastida, "there is broad consensus among experts that industrialized construction offers significant advantages over traditional methods." Some of the most notable benefits include reduced construction time, improved quality and precision of components, and enhanced working conditions and occupational safety.
The event featured a roundtable discussion with prominent industry experts: Francisco Diéguez (ITEC), Miguel Ángel Angulo (Metropolitan House), and Álvaro Nogueira San Román (Ávita Tech - Grupo Avintia), moderated by Josep Lluís Pellicer, Secretary of the Metropolitan House Foundation. All participants agreed on the need to promote industrialization as a means to transform the construction sector.
This study is the fifth applied research project produced by the Chair of Decent and Sustainable Housing at UPF-BSM—an initiative created in collaboration with the Metropolitan House Foundation with the aim of analyzing the real estate sector from a social, environmental, and economic perspective.
