Program curriculum and final degree
The syllabus includes six subjects that are described below:
Subject 1: Entrepreneurship and business essentials I (5 ECTS)
- Financials for non-financial professionals. Overview of the basic concepts for financial management of a technology-based company. Description of the Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow statements identifying the highlight concepts for a highly innovative and R&D intense company.
- Leadership and entrepreneurship. Understanding team formation, growth, and management in a highly dynamic and uncertain environment. Methodologies to identify the right professional profiles needed for every stage of the development of the company.
- Marketing and sales: strategic and business planning. Foundations of commercial activities, market definition, and targeting. Commercial plan alignment with R&D activities and medium and long-term strategy of corporate development.
- Business development and innovation. Value chain definition, product stages of development and identification of inflection value points. Business development activities and methodologies.
- Healthcare market and market access. Healthcare market arena description. Differences between the user and the payer of health technologies. Pricing and reimbursement fundamentals. Basics of the main international healthcare systems (US + EU).
Subject II: Entrepreneurship and business essentials II (5 ECTS)
- Health and Law. Protecting the intellectual property: patents, utility models, and industrial secret. Alignment of the Intellectual Property strategy with corporate development. Analysis
- of various relevant jurisdictions (US + EU + ASIA).
- Financing an innovative project. Private and public sources of financing. Business angels, crowdfunding, venture capital, private equity and stock markets. Strategic plan to finance technological development. Challenges in the coexistence of various sources of funding with their respective and distinct interests and expectation.
- Valuation of technology-based companies. Overview of the different methodologies used in the sector: direct costs, discounted cash flow, use of comparables. Venture capital valuation.
- Deals in the biomedical sector. Review of the main type of deals in the healthcare sector going from service contracts to M&As, covering licenses, collaboration agreements, and others. Deals in all value chain (from University to Company) will be treated. Business models for a healthcare start-up.
- Start-up corporate governance. Role of the Board of Directors and Board of Advisors. Investment agreements and shareholders agreements. Social responsibility, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development goals. Responsible research and innovation.
Subject III: Business horizons in biopharmaceuticals (5 ECTS)
This subject is devoted to provide the participants with the knowledge of real experiences in this sector and to understand how to initiate business and to cope with the difficulties. Its content is the following.
- Drug research and development. Drug development phases covering preclinical and clinical stages as well as its relationship with production and quality assurance (CMC)
- Regulatory aspects of US and EU. The current regulatory context for drug development covering regional differences and strategic decisions based on regulatory environments.
- Pricing and reimbursement. Healthcare systems evaluation of drug impact in society and national budgets. Current interesting cases such as orphan diseases or compassionate use of pharmaceuticals.
- Pharmaceutical marketing and sales. Drug commercialization strategies and planning. Methods for evaluating commercial opportunities and regional implantation. Generic drugs impact.
- Medical affairs. Evidence-based marketing, the role of the R&D and the medical departments. Scientific liaisons. The preparation of scientific materials. The use of real-world evidence to improve products and services.
Subject IV: Business horizons in medical devices (5 ECTS)
This subject is devoted to provide the participants with the knowledge of real experiences in this professional sector and to understand how to initiate business and to cope with the difficulties.
- Regulations in the US and EU. The current regulatory context for medical devices covering regional differences and strategic decisions based on regulatory environments. Classification of different sanitary products.
- Medical devices development. Discovery, preclinical and clinical development of a medical device.
- Design and production of a medical device. Overview of the importance of the design of the product, customer oriented and user-friendly. Production management and complexities.
- Commercialization of a medical device. Commercial planning and implementation for highly innovative medical devices. Internationalization strategy.
- Health technology assessment. Methodologies to measure the impact of medical devices in society, hospital budgets and healthcare system.
Subject V: Business horizons in digital health (5 ECTS)
The aim of this theme is to provide the participants with the knowledge of real experiences in this professional sector and to understand how to initiate business and to cope with the difficulties.
- Information technology and healthcare. Big Data, mHealth, and IT applied to health. Current breakthrough projects and exploration of successful business models. Product development and regulatory implications.
- Artificial Intelligence. Main health applications of AI and leading companies worldwide. The arrival of non-health players such as Google or Amazon.
- Telemedicine. Bringing healthcare to patients home. Economic and social impact on healthcare systems and patients’ carers and families.
- Robotics and healthcare. Current projects and potentiality of the use of robots in the healthcare sector, including treatments, medical procedures, diagnostics and patient management.
- Virtual reality. Current projects and potentiality of the use of robots in the healthcare sector, including treatments, medical procedures, diagnostics and patient management.
Subject VI: Final project (5 ECTS)
Along the whole program, students will conduct the final project, which will consist of a transversal project based on designing a business plan around a technology provided to them. Each student will have assigned a professor of the program who will be responsible for supervising and mentoring their progress.
The final projects will be presented in front of a panel of experts that will evaluate the quality of the work presented and will grade the students based on the contents of the proposals as well as on their performance during the presentation.
