Curriculum
The MSc in Finance and Banking is organized over three terms.
During the first term all students will learn the fundamentals in the Finance and Banking core courses. Electives will be distributed throughout the second and third terms.
Students have the option to do curricular internships in start-ups, financial institutions or corporations. Career development sessions, and a dedicated “Connecting with the Industry” course, will be offered to aid students in finding the placement and prepare them for their professional future.
From October to June, students will work on their MSc thesis, supported by a core faculty member and supervised by a faculty member specialised in the area.
Classes of the MSc in Finance and Banking take place at UPF Ciutadella Campus.

Complementary activities
The Master of Science in Finance and Banking also includes the possibility of participating in practical activities and activities for personal and professional growth such as:
- Brush-up Courses: preparatory crash-courses on business and economy-related subjects which take place two weeks prior to the beginning of the program.
- Spanish Course: 80% discount during the first term. 3 hours/week course at the UPF's language school.
- Career Development Program: career sessions and workshops where students obtain specific training on how to improve their professional profile, approach potential employers and develop professional soft skills.
- QTEM Program: After successfully completing the Master of Science in Finance and Banking students have the opportunity to participate in the QTEM Program, an optional and free of charge experience to study abroad at more than 20 top international universities which are leaders in the field of Economics.

- Study Trip: optional trip to a European city in which conferences and visits to companies will be scheduled so as to expand knowledge and acquire a global vision.
- UPF-BSM Inside: is a group of interdisciplinary subjects (applied data, communication, creativity, innovation and project management, sustainability and leadership among others) that, if you take this program, you can access at no additional cost. They are 100% online and you can take them throughout the academic year at your own pace, as they have been designed as self-study subjects.
Qualification obtained
Once students have completed the course they will obtain the Màster Universitari en Finances i Banca. Master of Science in Finance and Banking - Máster Universitario en Finanzas y Banca / Master of Science in Finance and Banking official Master's Degree awarded by Pompeu Fabra University.
Students will also receive an additional Master of Science in Finance and Banking completion certificate awarded by the UPF Barcelona School of Management.
Issuance of official Master's Degrees: The amount stipulated in the DOGC (Official Gazette of the Government of Catalonia) must be paid for the rights to issue the title. This rate varies annually and the rate in force at the time of application for the degree will be applied.

Head of Spanish Economics at CaixaBank Research
He is the Head of Spanish Economics at CaixaBank Research. He holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics, a Master in Economics and Finance from the Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros (CEMFI) and an Executive Development Programme from IESE Business School. Before joining CaixaBank he worked as Assistant Professor at the London School of Economics, as a Research Assistant in the Financial Stability department of the Bank of England and in the Financial Markets Group. His areas of study include Inequality, monetary policy, the real estate sector and financial stability. He has published articles in internationally renowned academic journals, as well as papers on topics such as economic inequality, monetary policy, the real estate sector and financial stability, among others. He is Technical Secretary of the board of directors of the Cercle d’Economia. - Enrique Benito

Enrique holds a Ph.D in Economics from City, University of London and a Master’s in Finance and Quantitative Methods from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He is a former Fellow at the University of Oxford´s Saïd Business school and a member of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). He is now a Director at HSBC in London. His past experience spans consulting at a Big 4, where he advised commercial and investment banks on treasury, capital and funding matters, and roles at GE Capital Bank, the Central Bank of Spain and the former UK Financial Services Authority, now part of the Bank of England, where he was involved in the development and implementation of the Basel III framework. - Victor Burguete Vidal

Victor Burguete Vidal is an Economist at Banc Sabadell Research Department. He holds a MSc in Specialized Economic Analysis from Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (BGSE). He also holds a degree in Treasury and Financial Markets from IEB and a bachelor in Economics and in Journalism, both from Carlos III University of Madrid. Previously, he worked as a researcher and a research assistant at IESE Business School and at “La Caixa” Research Department. Director of Research and Statistics at the CNMV
Eudald holds a degree in Economics from the University of Barcelona and an M.Sc. in Economics from the University of Minnesota, where he focused on Financial Economics and Econometrics, and taught (T.A) Managerial Economics and Microeconomics. He has also completed advanced management courses at several business schools including the INSEAD (AMP 2008). He is presently Director of Research and Statistics at the CNMV (Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores). He has spent most of his career working in the international regulatory and financial markets field. Among other positions, Eudald was Secretary General of IOSCO, a position he held for four years. During his tenure IOSCO developed and approved, among other policies, the first Principles for the Regulation and Supervision of Securities Markets (1998), adopted subsequently by the IMF to assess the quality of regulatory and supervisory systems around the world. Eudald has also served as a senior executive at financial markets and international financial companies, including the Financial Derivatives Exchange in Spain (MEFF), and Standard & Poor’s Index Services, where he held the position of Managing Director for Europe during 6 years. Javier has also undertaken research at the University of Maryland, Tilburg University, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Javier Gil-Bazo was the President of the Spanish Finance Association in 2018-19. His research interests cover institutional investors, investor behavior, asset management, and asset pricing. He is currently Associate Professor of Finance and Vicedean of Quality at Universidad Castilla-La Mancha, Adjunct Professor at the Instituto de Empresa (IE) Business School and Associate Editor of Studies in Economics and Finance. He has previously held teaching and research positions at the Financial Option Research Centre (Warwick Business School), Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics (Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Lisbon), IESE Business School, Universidad Carlos III (Madrid) and Universidad Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona). His research interests focus on finance in continuous time with special emphasis on derivatives markets, financial engineering applications, pricing of derivatives, empirical analysis of different pricing models, portfolio management, and term structure models. He has received several prizes for his research activity as, for instance, the Barclays Global Investors Australia Research Award or the prize Mutua Pelayo in the IX Italian-Spanish Congress on Financial and Actuarial Mathematics. He has a Master's in Business Administration (MBA) from the Leonard School of Business at New York University and an Industrial Engineering degree from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He has worked for many years in the field of Investment Banking. Currently, he is the Chairman of Closa Investment Bankers,a leader in the field since 1987. As a financial advisor, he has led numerous corporate operations in various sectors, for instance in Technology, Media, and Telecommunications sectors, with companies and international investors from around the world. She is a Senior Data Scientist at Accenture Applied Intelligence. She holds a master’s degree in Statistics and Operations Research as well as a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, UPC). Her main area of expertise is Operations Research related to Supply Chain & Operations. She has more than 4 years of experience on the translation of real-world problems into mathematical or conceptual models and their implementation through linear programming and metaheuristics. He is also Bundesbank Research Professor, CEMFI and CEPR Research Fellow, advisor of Bank of Spain, consultant in the European Central Bank, European Bank Authority and European Investment Bank, independent board member at Institut Català de Finances (ICF), and Member of the Group of Economic Advisers of the European Security Markets Authority (ESMA). He was board member at the European Systemic Risk Board and held visiting positions at Becker-Friedman Institute at Chicago University, MIT, IMF and World Bank. Peydró has had an ERC Consolidator grant until December 2021. Peydró specializes in Finance and Macroeconomics, mainly on banking, financial crises, systemic risk, monetary policy, macroprudential policy, globalization, financial contagion, financial innovation, credit, fintech, networks, capital and liquidity. Amedeo Pugliese is a Professor of Accounting at the University of Padua and visiting professor (long-term) at the Universtitat Pompeu Fabra. Amedeo held positions at the University of Naples ‘Federico II’ (Italy), Queensland University of Technology (Australia) and KU Leuven (Belgium). His research interests span across corporate governance, accounting in the banking industry and the effects of changes in financial regulation during systemic crisis. His main research interests are in the field of Operational Research and Machine Learning. She is the CEO of the Institut Català de Finances (ICF), the Public Catalan Bank. She holds a degree in Physics from the University of Barcelona (UB) and a master's degree in Finance from the Institut d'Estudis Financers (IEF). She did the Executive Program in Strategy & Operations of the Stanford Business School. She has obtained the FRM certification of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). Prior to becoming the CEO, she was the Director General of Finance and Operations at ICF. Previously, she was the Director General of Finance and Risk at the Instituto del Crédito Oficial (ICO). Jose Suarez-Lledo is advisor to the (Gestion Boutique VIII) Global Gradient fund. Heavily involved in the development of Machine Learning tools and Factor Models applied to investment strategies, portfolio management and the design of robo-advisors. Jose is also a free-lance Financial Consultant. Before this, he partnered with Kernel Analytics as credit risk director to offer advanced consulting services, focusing on forefront econometric & statistical techniques as well as Machine Learning models. He previously worked in CaixaBank as a Manager at the Financial Markets division within the Strategic Planning & Research department, where he was in charge of developing market analysis & forecasting models for financial variables, as well as the analysis reports that the department publishes regularly for clients and investors. Prior to that Jose worked at the Capital Planning & Forecasting department developing models and solutions as part of the methodological framework that allows the bank to generate capital projections. Before joining CaixaBank Jose was a Director at Moody’s Analytics based in London. As part of the Credit Analytics team he designed macro-econometric models for key economic and financial variables as well as retail and corporate credit models. Dr. Suarez-Lledo’s team provided consulting support to major industry players and implemented stress-testing solutions to quantify portfolio risk under alternative macroeconomic scenarios. He holds a bachelor's degree in Statistics (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, UPC) as well as a bachelor's degree in Economics (Universitat de Barcelona, UB). His main area of expertise is Data Science applied to the Supply Chain. He has more than 3 years of experience on the implementation of Heuristics and Machine Learning to solve actual business needs, specially related to the variability of Supply Chains. Adrià is also deeply involved in the Blockchain world. On one hand he is an active member of the Innovation team within Accenture where several Blockchain solutions have been built. Researcher at the Centre de Recerca en Economía International (CREI)
She is a Junior Researcher at the Centre de Recerca en Economía International (CREI). She is also a Research Affiliate at CEPR, an Affiliated Professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and at the Barcelona GSE, an Associate Editor at Management Science, and a member of the Editorial Board at The Review of Economic Studies. Before joining CREI in 2018, she was an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She earned her PhD in Economics from UC Berkeley and holds a master’s in finance and a B.A. in Economics from Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, in Argentina, where she is from. Before her PhD, she spent two years as a Junior Professional Associate at the World Bank. Her research focuses on topics related to information asymmetries and their impact on financial markets and the real economy. She is interested in factors that lead to information and belief heterogeneity, in how these factors may impact incentives of market players to screen and monitor assets, and in the study of regulatory policies to increase liquidity and discipline in markets. - Sergio Vicente
Assistant Professor at the Université du Luxembourg
He is an Assistant Professor and a Senior Research Scientist of Finance at the Université du Luxembourg. He earned his PhD in Economics from New York University. He has held full-time faculty positions at Queen Mary University of London and at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. His main research areas are banking, financial innovation, and the regulation of financial institutions, including topics such as the automatization of lending, the regulation of capital and liquidity, the architecture of banking unions, and the effect of monetary policy on lending. He also teaches finance, banking and economics courses at the University of Luxembourg, University College of London, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He also teaches short courses at several MBA and MSc programs and is an occasional instructor at executive programs for bankers.

The evaluation system may vary from course to course and it will be based on the student's performance on a selection of the following activities:

Project-oriented learning and the combination of lectures and active methodologies such as case studies, flipped learning, solving real problems and professional simulations allow the student to connect theory and practice, acquire advanced skills and achieve learning which is transferable to work.
