Our students' experience

ANNA JUAN
Academic year 2014-15
Coordinator of the department "Dissemination of Science and Corporate Reputation" - Health Research Institute of La Fe Hospital (Valencia)

I applied to the Health Research Institute Hospital La Fe, in Valencia, and I was selected among 700 candidates thanks to one of the projects I did in the Corporate Communication Workshop of the master program, in which I studied the digital environment of a research institute. I was the only candidate who knew how a research institute works and doing the master program was the key to being chosen.

My current job is to convince researchers of the importance of dissemination, to give visibility to the institute and to science in general.

ALEJANDRA RUIZ
Academic year 2014-15
Manager at Piura con Ciencia

The scientific world always appealed to me; I studied biochemistry. However, during my studies, I felt I should focus more on communication. In my university's database, I found that one former student had done the master's degree. It was the first time I found out that popular science existed as a speciality. I had previously thought it was a hobby.

The master's program was a great experience for me. Like me, many of my colleagues did the master's degree straight after finishing their bachelor's degree, so everything was new to us, but others already had experience. By providing information about different areas, the master's program enabled me to learn a bit about everything, which has helped me a great deal in my work. I do not need to know about certain topics in depth but I do need a general idea. The lecturers were always willing to share their experiences and engage in direct, professional contact with the students. In fact, I have stayed in contact with them as time has gone by.

When I finished the master's degree I started to work at a university in Peru in institutional relations and fundraising.

JUAN MIGUEL RAMUDO
Academic year 2015-16
Freelance journalist

I moved to Barcelona for personal reasons. I took advantage of the situation to brush up on my work skills and looked into the various options available. I thought that the Master in Scientific Communication could be interesting for me. What I liked most was the professionals working in scientific journalism telling us about their experiences, which were motivational.

The master's program enabled me to quickly find work as a freelancer for Diario Médico and I then started to find more work in the medical journalism sector in Barcelona.

CARLOS JOSÉ SIERRA SÁNCHEZ
Academic Year 2017-2018
Communication Department at the Genomic Regulation Center

After several attempts to make the leap from a research career to scientific communication I spoke with several professionals in this sector in Spain and many of them recommended this program, a recommendation that turned out to be very successful since it has allowed me to acquire the communication tools that I was lacking.

These tools were obtained through the master classes and with the practices I did at Ciencia, Comunicación y Sociedad Center in  UPF, at the Parque de Investigción Biomédica de Barcelona (PRBB) and the Centro de Regulación Genómica (CRG), where I currently work. Among my duties, I currently manage part of the scientific program of the CRG including Scientific Cafés, student workshops or traveling electrophoresis kits. I am also a documentalist and scientific advisor of the scientific program of TVE2 "El Cazador de Cerebros", where I manage and give content to their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

At the BSM I discovered professional opportunities inside the field of scientific communication that I did not consider previously such as institutional communication, museography, etc. I acquired and perfected a multitude of useful tools such as informative writing, scriptwriting for radio and audiovisual, podcasting or social network management, and I had the possibility to put it into practice thanks to the internships offered. I also enjoyed the possibility of meeting an exceptional faculty and colleagues.
