What is the Sustainability Observatory?

The Observatory is a centre dedicated to study, reflection and knowledge transfer in the field of sustainability of the business sector, embracing three concepts in an integrated way:

  • Economic Sustainability: Encouraging prosperous business models.
  • Social Sustainability: Bringing well-being to people.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Respecting the planet.

  • Be a proactive applied research body, which is based on the principles of pluralism, autonomy and critical capacity.
  • Develop projects that bring rationality to the public debate and encourage action in public and private institutions.
  • Systematically spread knowledge through activities and publications.


The UPF-BSM Sustainability Observatory has a team of first-class researchers, who combine academic excellence with professional experience, united by an interest in business sustainability and embracing different areas of knowledge, including marketing, finance, operations, technology, strategy and corporate social responsibility.


Oriol Montanyà

A graduate in Sociology from the UAB, graduate in Journalism from the UPF and a doctoral student in Economics and Business at UVic, he began his professional career in the field of communication but soon turned to the retail sector, where for more than a decade he has held managerial positions, especially in the field of logistics and operations. He is currently Director of the Academic Area of Operations and Technology at the UPF Barcelona School of Management.

Researchers and consultants

Ramon Bastida

He has a degree in Business Administration and Management from the UAB, a master's degree in Accounting and Financial Management from IDEC-UPF and a PhD in Business Administration and Management from the URV. He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Economics and Business at UPF and vice-dean of the UPF Barcelona School of Management, a task he combines with consulting for companies in the field of finance and management.

Luz Parrondo

Director of the Department of Finance and Control at the UPF Barcelona School of Management. Director of the Master in Financial Management and the Postgraduate course in Blockchain and other DLT technologies. PhD in Economics, Finance and Management from Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). As a researcher, she specializes in the study of financial management, with particular emphasis on the impact of new technologies in the financial, accounting and auditing sectors, profit management, risk management and corporate social responsibility.

Lluís Vicent

University lecturer on probability, statistics and data analytics since 1996. He has researched in data analytics applied especially to learning, creating predictive performance models, automatic competency assessment programmes, and student segmentation. He has been a principal investigator in European and Spanish projects and has published the results of his research in more than 70 articles in international journals and conferences, and more than ten books.

Erola Palau

Graduate in International Business and Languages from Rotterdam Business School and Master in Management (specialization in Business Analytics) from the UPF Barcelona School of Management. A dynamic and analytical person with international professional experience acquired working in eight countries.

Josep Maria Galí

PhD in Management Sciences (HEC Paris), academic and researcher on matters of consumption, sustainability and good governance. Since 2007 he has focused his research on integrating sustainability into corporate and marketing strategy in order to add value to companies and customers. He was director of the CREAFUTUR Outlook 2013 project at Creapolis and published the Spanish version of Sustainability Marketing, as co-author, with Frank Belz (TUM Munich) and Kent Peattie (Cardiff University).

Jordi Perramon

PhD in Business Administration and Management and Academic Director of the Master in Financial Management and Business Auditing at UPF-BSM. He is an accredited professor with AQU and ANECA. He has received the UPF Board of Trustees award for best lecturer in the degree field. He is part of an official research group on Eco-innovation and the circular economy and has published more than twenty articles in journals with international impact.

Andrei Boar

Graduated in Economics and Law from the UPF, master's degree in Accounting and Financial Management from UPF-BSM and doctoral student in Economics and Business at the UIC. He is currently Professor of Finance and Accounting at UPF-BSM and contributes to the co-ordination of Executive Education courses.

Oriol López-Villena

Degree in Economics from the UB, Auditor of Accounts and lecturer at UPF-BSM. Advisor on the strategic and financial growth of companies, he has accumulated a great deal of experience helping companies to grow, prosper and leave a legacy. Founder of the "Forum Creix", author of the books "Grow and Prosper" and "The Proactive Entrepreneur" and a regular contributor to the media. He is the only Spanish representative on the list "The World's Most Inspiring Accountants", by British author Steve Pipe, which brings together the 62 most inspiring assessors in the world.

Llorenç Bagur

Lecturer on Financial Economics, Accounting and Auditing at Pompeu Fabra University and the Barcelona School of Management. PhD in Business Administration and Management from the University of Barcelona. Co-director of the Master's Degree in Financial and Business Accounting at the UPF Barcelona School of Management. Vice-dean of Faculty at the UPF Barcelona School of Management. Business consultant on accounting, financial and management matters.


We provide a selection of relevant articles and items of news that deal with sustainability issues, with special emphasis on current events in the UPF Barcelona School of Management, although also included are those international items that stand out due to their relevance or innovative character.

  • The UPF Barcelona School of Management inaugurates a new year marked by hybrid teaching (spanish) [28/09/2020].
    On Monday, the UPF Barcelona School of Management inaugurated the academic year 2020–2021, which will be governed by a hybrid teaching model to face what will be an exceptional new year due to COVID-19. Anna Gener, president and CEO of Savills Aguirre Newman Barcelona and patron of the Museu Picasso Foundation, delivered the inaugural lecture, which she used to reflect on the 'protagonists of the post-pandemic world'.
  • Mercadona and the UPF Barcelona School of Management create a chair to boost the circular economy (spanish) [26/09/2020].
    The UPF Barcelona School of Management and Mercadona, a physical and online supermarket, have sealed a collaboration agreement to create the "Mercadona Chair in Circular Economy", which will aim to find ways to take advantage of the savings in resources derived from the application of the principles of the circular economy.
  • Are collaborative economy companies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals? (spanish) [20/09/2020].
    The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are part of the 2030 Agenda created by the UN to move towards sustainable development with missions as diverse as eradicating poverty, using renewable energy or having safe and sustainable cities. Although at first its 169 targets were designed for countries, companies are also a key element in meeting them.
  • Sustainable development and the circular economy: the role of institutions in circular consumption (spanish) [29/06/2020].
    Recent events have highlighted the vulnerability of the current linear consumption model and the impossibility of maintaining it over time and in the long term. The causes are known to all and are shown in the media a thousand times a day: lack of resources, climate change, pandemics or inequality are words that have unfortunately become part of our regular vocabulary. This fact has certainly influenced people and made us aware of the seriousness of the problem that affects us.
  • UPF is the 10th best young university in the world, according to Times Higher Education (spanish) [25/06/2020].
    For the first time, UPF manages to position itself in the world's top 10 for this classification. The Young University Ranking 2020, which includes a total of 414 centres under the age of fifty, places Pompeu Fabra in 1st place in Spain and 5th in Europe.
  • UPF-BSM publishes a book on COVID-19 with the reflections and critical thoughts of 18 experts (spanish) [19/06/2020].
    The UPF Barcelona School of Management created the COVID-19 Observatory in order to contribute, from the transversality of the different disciplines it teaches, to providing a shared view and reflection formed by its academics and professionals based on evidence, constructive criticism and with a clear social commitment.

  • Online Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication
    Communication, Journalism and Translation Area.

    The Online Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication prepares its students for the generation and transmission of scientific knowledge, and ideas and opportunities arising from the application and associated technologies of that knowledge.
  • Master in Public and Social Policies
    Area of Law, Politics and Public Management
    Management: Vicenç Navarro, Mònica Clua and the Steering Committee formed by V. Navarro, J. Benach, D. Steinwachs, M. Clua, K. Pollack and S. Sarasa.
    The Master's Degree in Public and Social Policy, which is taught in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, provides the training and tools needed to develop responses to current social needs. Through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary training, the programme aims to train professionals capable of responding to social needs and solving all kinds of social problems.
  • Postgraduate course in Total Supply Chain Management
    Business Administration and Management Area.

    The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the importance of supply chains in the framework of business strategy, showing that much of the strength of a business depends on the quality of the mechanisms that must ensure the provision of products or services, both under normal conditions and in exceptional situations.
  • Postgraduate Course on Management of Social Responsibility (CSR)

    The main objective is to train professionals who can generate value in the business environment and in society, working for a global, sustainable and inclusive economy.

    New technologies are producing radical changes in urban centres. We need to plan and design strategies that allow us to achieve more liveable and sustainable cities.
