In an international company, the role played by the Human Resources function has a strategic dimension that means it can be the difference between the success or failure of the company, and the survival or winding up of the international project. The aim of this subject is to teach the fundamentals for analyzing, planning, and implementing the Human Resources area in an international company. The course will therefore provide an overview of the main activities of this area.

In addition, it will analyse the management of expatriates, impatriates and executives in multinationals.Learning outcomes. 

At the end of this module, students will be able to answer all of the following questions: 

  •  What are the advantages and disadvantages of external and internal recruitment and selection in an international company?
  •  How are job positions designed?
  •  How is employee training and development implemented in the international arena?
  •  What approach and tools can be used to influence employee engagement?
  •  Understanding the success factors and global challenges that an international company faces.
  •  Understanding the different organizational structures of international companies and their connection with the strategic approaches adopted.
  •  What are the main advantages of using expatriates? And of using local managers? Why are impatriates a growing trend in the management of subsidiaries?
  •  What HR policies can be applied to reduce failure rates in expatriates?
  •  What coordination and control mechanisms can be used in the management of international subsidiaries?
  •  Understanding the new trends in international management contracting.
  •  Being familiar with key HR issues from a real and international perspective.

Lecturer (accredited as University Professor) in the Department of Business Management of the University of Valencia. He has a PhD in Business, obtaining the Outstanding Achievement Prize. He has been a visiting lecturer at HEC-Montreal (Canada), Manchester Business School, King’s College London, and UWE-Bristol (UK). He teaches undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate, and executives programs. Specialized in International Strategy, Business Turnaround, and Clustering, he has published articles in the most important journals in this field and has co-authored books and chapters in collective works. His research focuses on the intersection between Location-Strategy-Performance. He manages the Research Group "GESTOR" (Organizational Geostrategy: Clusters and Competitiveness).
