Video games have been around for many years. Initially there were single-player video games, which ran on computers or consoles, and competitions and meetings between players have been organized ever since. The appearance of multiplayer and connected video games over the Internet prompted the emergence of structured competitions and the creation of a new sector: eSports. We will explore and analyse how video games have evolved since the beginning and how some of them have helped to create eSports –video game competitions that take place on a regular basis, are broadcast on the Internet and on television platforms with audiences similar to those of many sports, filling stadiums around the world. W

We will learn about the different actors in the ecosystem:

  • Publishers, those who control the IP of the video game
  • Tournament organizers
  • The teams participating in the competitions, as well as their players
  • The platforms on which the competitions are broadcast
  • The brands involved in the ecosystem  

We will analyse the relationship model between all the actors, the business model and the future challenges of this new sector that continues to grow every year and that is creating new professions in a digital environment hitherto unknown by the majority of the population but which form part of the lifestyle of young people today. 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to answer the following:

  • What are eSports? 
  • What is the eSports ecosystem?
  • What is the role of video game owners? 
  • What is a tournament organizer and how are competitions structured?
  • How does an eSports team work?
  • What is the business model of the different agents?

Evaluation

The course is evaluated based on the result of participation in the programmed practical activities and a discussion forum. The activities are evaluated through a rubric system that guides each activity and, in turn, leads to a score accompanied by comments for each participant on their areas for improvement. This system is seen as a complementary tool that helps ensure the set goals and skills of the course are achieved.

How to apply?

To enrol in this program, you must read and accept the Contract Terms and Conditions and fill in the registration form.

The following steps need to be taken to register for the course:

1. Fill in the admission application form. You will receive a username and password to access the eSecretaría platform.
2. On the platform, upload a scanned copy of your ID (both sides).
3. Go to the "Enrolment" section to pay for the course by credit card or bank transfer.

In certain cases, additional documentation may be requested.
